Historic Renovation of Semiahmoo Resort
Preserving The Historic Style
For years, visitors traveled to this beautiful golfing resort and spa overlooking the Semiahmoo Bay. Now in the process of a major historic renovation, the Semiahmoo Resort is committed to preserving its aesthetics while upgrading performance features.
GGLO was brought on to renovate this landmark Northwest destination resort’s restaurant and bar. The overarching inspiration was to create fresh and dynamic spaces that strongly emanated the ‘Historic, Regional and Authentic’ feeling inherent in the resort. The materials, detailing and aesthetics were honest, simple and purposefully built.
Referencing a 'Coastal Cottage' Character
The renovation of the restaurant and bar pays homage to its existing architecture and the natural features of the harbor on which it sits. The building and its history was deeply rooted in the local community and influenced by the rich seaside spirit of its location. “We wanted to respect the original design intent and keep a holistic sense of place throughout,” said Pamela Trevithick, Principal at GGLO. The bar concept draws inspiration from the historic cannery while the restaurant references a ‘coastal cottage’ character.
Matching Wood Windows With Original Design
Milgard’s Essence Series® product line was chosen to replace the bar’s old, failing windows. The project designers wanted a durable product that could perform well in an extreme environment as the resort receives lots of sun and wind exposure. Essence Series® windows offered the tough, low-maintenance fiberglass exterior with the classic warmth of a solid wood interior.
“The whole space was a transformation,” said Trevithick. “At GGLO we design for authenticity, improving the relationship between people and place. What’s most important is that we speak to the community and context of the project.”
Phase I was completed in 2014. Semiahmoo recently won the Best in Hospitality Award at the 2014 Northern Pacific Chapter International Interior Design Association awards.
