Wood Windows Accent a Dream Home Surrounded by Redwoods
The Martin’s were thinking about where to spend their retirement years when an opportunity arose to purchase some land in Santa Rosa, CA. They were no stranger to new home construction, having built their last home at The Sea Ranch over 25 years ago. There was a considerable amount of clearing that needed to be done in order to prepare the lot, including removal of blackberry bushes, California wild grape, and bay trees, but, the location was worth it.
As they prepared for the design phase of their home, one of the first people they spoke to was Elee Tsai. Having designed their Sea Ranch property previously, he was honored and delighted to work with the Martin’s again. After that first meeting to share their vision with the architect, the homeowners spent many days sitting and looking at the beautiful redwood forest that surrounded them and decided that the view of the trees was where they wanted to focus. It took a few design iterations to achieve the dream home they had pictured in their mind, but, in the end, their home blended into its surroundings as they intended.
The architect designed several large walls of windows to help bring the outside in. Because the Martin’s had previous experience with Milgard when they designed their Sea Ranch home, they looked to Milgard again to see the latest trends and current product line. “We liked the energy efficient Essence Series® wood window immediately!” the Martin’s proclaimed. “The Clear Vertical Grain Douglas Fir interior frame trim we saw in the brochure was exactly what we wanted and we showed it to the architect and contractor.”
The Martin’s went on to say that their favorite part of the window and door project was the reaction from friends who stopped by during construction. Their eyes were wide with wonder as they saw the gorgeous redwood trees through their expansive window views.
The design offered a challenge to the builder with the multiple angles to the floor plan and varied roof orientation and pitches. The result was a home with a lot of character and a unique perspective inside and out featuring shingle siding, a metal roof, and a fiberglass exterior window frame color in Fern.
The Martin’s have advice for homeowners who are considering a new home construction project. “Do your homework and know what you want before you start, but, have a plan that’s flexible for modifications along the way if needed. Research all phases of the construction process and work out small details ahead of time. Very little surpasses the enjoyment of the finished project turning out as expected or better.”
