When Gwynne Hampton Slack opened his doors for business in 1947, he realized that the only way he could compete with the well established local lumber yards was to not only to offer the best selection but also the service.
Over 60 years later, the competitive landscape has undergone a significant transformation; Large do-it-yourself centers have replaced the traditional "mom and pop" hardware stores and large foreign conglomerates dominate the lumber yards.
