Customer Reviews for Essence Series® French-Style Sliding Doors

Essence Series® French-Style Sliding Doors is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 103.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outside protection, beautiful inside We are happy to let you know that we are pleased with our new windows. The old windows were far past their prime, especially the outside wood. The fibreglass exterior looks great and the inside wood is beautiful. The new windows make the house more pleasant in terms of temperature and no worries about colour fading. Bert and Connie

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Get ready to wait The windows are beautiful once stained, and so is the hardware. However, both the double hung and slider windows are drafty, and they don't all open and close with the same effort. Some are stiff, some are smooth. But this has turned out to be the same with their other levels of windows (which we have in the bathrooms). And pray that the windows arrive in pristine condition because its a 4-5 month wait before someone will come to look at them let alone another wait of possible months for replacement parts. That is the same if it comes broken or if a part fails under warranty or if you break a part and are looking to pay for replacement pieces. Beautiful, not cheap, drafty, and with a wait time that the DMV is aspiring too. Not worth it in my opinion. Try a different brand for better service times...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slider Doors A+, Slider Screens D+... First let me say the quality and features of the doors we ordered are just what we were looking for. They not only meet but exceed our expectations in terms of quality, appearance and features (wood inside and vinyl outside). The screens that came with doors however, are another matter. They do not function nearly as well as the doors. In fact, they do not function well at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Window My dad installed this new window in my room and I absolutely love it. It's large, allows a lot of light to shine in, and the slider glides like butter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lots of problems with Essence windows To start with the positive, we really like the appearance of the outside of our 17 new Essence windows. And now, everything else. The way the windows were packaged for shipment was a problem. The plastic wrap was directly on the glass and caused streaking that was nearly impossible to remove. The amount of damage to the wood interior of the windows when they arrived was very disappointing. There were areas that were gouged, cracks in the wood, and even places that had been filled by Milgard before shipment which says Milgard knew there was a problem and shipped it anyway. One of the windows was improperly manufactured. The low-e coating was on the outside surface of the window. When that coating gets wet, it is destroyed and turns pink and spotty. Doesn't that get checked before it leaves your factory? We paid our painted $300 extra to patch, fill, and sand to repair the damaged wood surfaces. We should be reimbursed for having to accept damaged product and then having to do the work to make it right. The covers that slide over the lever locks are not attached and come off easily from time to time. One window was delivered missing a lever cover. I am still waiting for this part to arrive. The screens fit well on the sliding windows but my biggest disappointment is that the fit of the screens on the casement windows is completely unacceptable. There is a 3/16" gap above the entire top edge of every screen frame. Just about any bug can easily crawl through that and into the house. The screens cannot be made taller to fill the gap because there is already so much interference when you try to remove the screen. You have to lift and drag the screen over the crank handle. No doubt there will be damage over time to the rubber gasket on the bottom edge of the screen and/or to the crank handle. The depth of the frame around the screen is insufficient to fill the slot in the wood. When you touch the screen, it rattles around and moves front to back in the slot. More than one tech has been out and they agree that the screens do not fit. We have paid many thousands of dollars for one of Milgard's top line products and we have screens that won't keep bugs out. How can Milgard think it is acceptable to sell a product that doesn't satisfy one of its most basic functions. Isn't that what screens are for, to keep bugs out?? I have spent so many hours trying to get these quality issues addressed but I'm not sure Milgard cares about customer satisfaction. I am still hopeful that Milgard will help me find a solution so that our screens will keep bugs out. I have photos showing the type and extent of damage to the wood interior of the windows but posting those with a review would be very damning. No one would want to buy windows that look the way ours did when they arrived.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cracked Door Frame and Non functioning latch We had two initial problems with our Essence Sliding Glass door. First the weather strip between the two sliding doors was over torqued with the screws that split the door frame from top to bottom, see picture. We only discovered this when our painter removed the weather strip to paint the doors. I would say this could be a one time mistake, but don't think so due to the other manufacturing errors that were made on the installation of latches on all of our 4 casement windows, see casement window review. Second, the latch mechanism hooks to do not hook in the the latch on the door frame. The hooks reach out to deep into the latch for proper clearance of the latch. The Milgard technician had to jury rig the latch with wooden shims to allow the hooks the clearance to latch on properly. The picture below shows the wooden shims that were installed that allowed the hooks to latch on properly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Casement Window Latch Alignment I ordered four Essence casement windows. Every one of the window's latches did not line up with the latch hardware on the window's frame to allow the window to close properly with the hand crank It was not a coincidence since all the windows were misaligned. There is something wrong in the manufacturing process that does not verify the latches are properly aligned. The picture below shows how the Milgard service technician had to move each latch.
