Overview of modern farmhouse design elements

To achieve the modern farmhouse look, it’s important to understand the key design elements that define this style.

Modern Farmhouse Style Doors

Modern farmhouse doors are usually neutral colors like black, white, or natural wood. Classic French doors, which have glass panels that let in natural light and connect indoor and outdoor spaces, are popular for exterior doors in the farmhouse style. Barn doors, with their rustic appeal, are another popular choice for both interior and exterior use.

Modern Farmhouse Colors

The modern farmhouse color palette is based on neutral tones. Natural wood tones are also common, especially in interior modern farmhouse windows and doors. These colors help create a bright, clean look while allowing textures and materials to stand out.

In our inspiring example, all the little details work together to achieve the modern farmhouse look. The colors of gray, brown and white with black accents are carried through the entire space making it feel calm and cohesive. Natural wood furnishings warm up the space and are not too delicate for daily use.

Modern Farmhouse Design Elements

Incorporating natural and reclaimed materials is key to the modern farmhouse style. Organic elements like wicker or rattan, along with natural wood flooring, create warmth. Mixing fabrics and textures, such as linen, cotton, and wool, softens the look and makes the space feel cozy.

This home exudes downhome comfort, with modern sophistication. Farmhouse elements that were used include reclaimed wood, metal and wrought iron accents, organic accent pieces, natural wood flooring, and a mix of fabrics and textures. It was important that the space was comfortable as well as livable.

Modern Farmhouse Windows

Windows play a major role in modern farmhouse design. In a modern farmhouse, trim around doors and windows is simple and natural: You’ll often find modern farmhouses with white windows on the interior. On the exterior, modern farmhouse windows have simple grid patterns that create a traditional look. Black farmhouse windows are especially popular, offering a clean, modern contrast to lighter exteriors or interiors.

Looking for inspiration for your next project? Capture the warmth and comfort of the farmhouse style with these window design ideas.

White modern farmhouse with black windows

One of the most iconic modern farmhouse looks is a white exterior paired with black-framed windows. This bold contrast makes the windows stand out while maintaining a clean, timeless appearance. Black window frames bring a modern edge to a traditional look and spotlight the windows as an important design element.

The use of black farmhouse windows works very well in our example. MILGARD® Ultra Series fiberglass windows and patio doors in the color black bean look very crisp and clean against the white exterior, making it bold, yet at the same time understated.

Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Windows

Large, open kitchen windows are perfect for the modern farmhouse style. A row of windows above the sink can flood the kitchen with natural light, making the space feel more connected to the outdoors. Consider casement windows that open outward to let in fresh air, or go with a combination of fixed and operable windows to balance style with function.

Our inspirational example uses a combination window over the sink to let in plenty of light and views. The kitchen’s accents are a mix of metals and natural elements. Reclaimed wood floors and shelving feel homey, rustic lighting adds charm and the white subway tiles, cabinets, and countertops keep everything crisp and clean looking.

Modern farmhouse black interior windows

Black isn’t just for modern farmhouse exterior windows. Interior black-framed windows are a growing trend. Black interior windows can create a striking contrast, giving your home a modern touch while staying true to farmhouse roots.

In the mudroom of our design inspiration, the white beadboard feels cozy and looks clean against the black accents of the drawer pulls and coat hooks. The lighting fixtures with bubble glass give an antique feel, but the wrought iron housing pulls in the cottage farmhouse look. Wicker baskets were added for storage and to continue the addition of natural accents throughout the house.

Modern farmhouse with big windows

In a modern farmhouse, large windows and doors can transform a space by bringing in more natural light and making rooms feel larger. Floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized picture windows, and sliding glass doors or French doors work especially well, providing expansive views of the outdoors that enhance the farmhouse feeling of connection to nature.

Because this home was designed for entertaining, our aluminum, three-panel, glass stacking wall was the perfect solution. The homeowners can easily move from indoor to outdoor living and have room for friends and family to join them.
