Silver Vinyl Windows Give the Look of Aluminum

The Unique Challenges

The Ferrara Apartment complex in North Hollywood, California had two unique challenges as construction was underway.

1. The California Title 24 energy requirement which focuses on U Value (how much heat transfers through a window), and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), (how well a window resists heat transfer.)

2. The other was related to Design Pressure, which refers to the maximum positive and negative wind load that a window or door can experience without breaking, deglazing or permanently distorting.

The architect originally designed the building with aluminum windows in mind, but that material could not be used. Aluminum conducts too much heat and was not able to meet the California Title 24 requirement, so, another solution was required.

Choosing Silver Vinyl Windows

The developer wanted the "look" of aluminum, but the thermal performance of a vinyl window for new construction. Milgard® Tuscany® Series vinyl windows with a premium exterior frame color in Silver was selected.

Matching The Requirements

The project was 6 stories and included custom configurations that required a Design Pressure of 35 for all windows.

By using Tuscany Series vinyl windows with one perimeter frame and an Internal Meeting Rail (IMR) system, Milgard was able to build the desired configurations and meet the requirements.
